With a worn, glossy finish, this orangeware bowl is a beautiful example of Maya pottery. The delicate bowl is patterned in relief with two semi-abstract anthropomorphic faces, linked by a pattern of gracefully arching etched lines. Exposure to combusted materials during firing has darkened the red clay slip in a process known as "fire clouding," resulting in irregular imperfections that add to the bowl's rich character. With balanced proportions and thin walls, the bowl is an exquisite display of Pre-Columbian artistry, presented here on a custom steel mount.
