Created by needlework artist Beata Kania, this intricate embroidered rose pin is an exceptional piece of wearable art. Using a 19th-century Chinese qipao as the base material, Kania enhanced the original forbidden stitch embroidery with red and pink thread to give the rose petals soft, lifelike dimension. The leaves have been embellished with linear green-toned beads to add definition, while sequins and a cluster of blush-colored beads provide fanciful sparkle. This dazzling pin recalls the intricacy of Chinese bead embroidery and perhaps conveys a similar meaning as a symbol of true love.

Originally from Warsaw, Poland, Beata Kania is an interdisciplinary artist and fashion studies professor at Chicago's Columbia College. Drawn to embroidery at a young age, she pursued her interest into adulthood, eventually earning first prize in an international embroidery competition sponsored by the Royal Academy of Needlework in London. Story telling, mystique, and folklore define Kania's work, influences she brings to a wide variety of projects, from costume design to animated film.
