A symbol of compassion and wisdom, Guanyin is a bodhisattva venerated by Buddhists and Taoists alike. This exquisite porcelain sculpture from the early 20th century depicts the serene-faced goddess holding lotus plants, symbols of purity and divinity, in her characteristic flowing white robes. Crafted with keen attention to detail and a sense of ethereal lightness, the figure is made of a clay known as blanc de chine. The clay’s low iron content allows it to keep its white color after firing, here applied with a white glaze to further enhance its pristine appearance.
