Large Burled Scroll Container

A distinguished member of the Qing dynasty literati would have used this 19th century sculptural burled rootwood container to hold his scrolls. Its organic form reflects a cultivated taste for nature's peculiar effects and humble associations that was widespread amongst a cultured group of 18th-19th century Chinese artists and literati.
