A distinguished member of the Qing Dynasty literati would have used this 19th century sculptural burled rootwood container to hold his scrolls. Its organic form reflects a cultivated taste for nature's peculiar effects and humble associations that was widespread amongst a cultured group of 18th-19th century Chinese artists and literati. The container is carved out of a wood burl, highly valued by collectors and woodworkers for its unique shape and extraordinary patterning. Its worn and warmly patinated surface speaks to its age and calls to be touched.

“I am particularly fond of PAGODA RED as we have known the family for so long. Betsy is a professional in every way and her intelligent taste comes from a long line of family knowledge in the arts. She and her team are the very best to work with and we find treasures with every visit!”
