In China, smoking developed its own etiquette. The man who owned this 19th century handcrafted pipe may have followed the teachings of the famous poet Lu Yao. He believed that there were specific moments when smoking was not appropriate: while feeding cranes or admiring plum blossoms, during sophisticated conversation, when honoring your ancestors, or lying down with a woman. This simple and elegant white brass pipe is properly displayed on a custom steel mount.
