Drum-form stools such as this were traditionally used in gardens and outdoor pavilions where upper class scholars read, wrote, gathered for discussion and, in general, developed their inner sensibilities. This contemporary example is carved from solid limestone with a ribbed texture suggestive of a squash or melon, traditional symbols of longevity and perpetuity. The surface is further decorated with etchings of fruit & flora, including pomegranates, acorns, peonies and chrysanthemums. Bringing the permanence of stone to its surroundings, the drum is ideal today as a low garden stool, side table or pedestal.
