In 17th-century Japan, kimono-clad men compensated for the garment’s lack of pockets by wearing small pouches attached to the robe’s sashes with button-like fasteners known as netsuke. Although these tiny, fob-like objects had a practical purpose, they were exquisitely crafted of ivory or wood in a variety of inventive forms. Perhaps reserved for more intimate occasions, the inside of this carved strawberry netsuke depicts a an erotic scene.
