This set of four ceramic musicians was created in China's Shanxi province in the Ming dynasty and was likely modeled after mingqi burial figures. Depicting the pleasures of daily life, mingqi were offerings to ensure special treatment in the afterlife, often in the form of servants, dancers, musicians, concubines, and horses. Coated with green, amber, and cream-colored glazes, these ceramic musicians are ornamented in the sancai, or three-color, manner, a traditional style of glaze used as early as the Tang dynasty (618–907). With drums and trumpets in their hands, these four musicians stand ready to jump into song and dance.
