Impeccably cast of bronze, this mid-19th century shokudai, or candle stand, is a spectacular example of traditional Japanese metalwork. The well proportioned shokudai stands quite tall, stabilized by a heavy bronze base plate. The rod is secured by a chrysanthemum form base, and at the top, the prickets emerge from traditional shallow dishes with accompanying ring guards. Wick-tending pinchers hang from a small hook on the rod's side, and a bronze-cast wick box sits on the candle stand's base. An unusual find, this shokudai is a wonderful tabletop accessory for a console table or sideboard.
