This beautifully sculpted pair of unglazed pottery equestrians was made over 1,100 years ago during China’s illustrious Tang Dynasty (618–906 AD). Each horse stands with their legs firmly planted on the base, while the mounted riders play their musical instruments. Long ago, these musicians were part of a prince’s hunting procession; the other sculptures have been lost, but each would have depicted a different member of the party.
