This wide-mouth terracotta basin dates to the early 20th century and was once used for cooking meals in the kitchen of a Qing-dynasty home. The bowl's glazed interior and raised strap handles indicate it was likely hung over an open fire and used as a baking dish. Despite its utilitarian use, the vessel is nonetheless beautifully finished in a light green glaze in the palette of celadon ware. Today, we love this rustic kitchen vessel as a serving bowl or tabletop planter.
