This decorative box is a Japanese tabako-bon, or 'tobacco tray,' used to store tobacco and smoking accessories. Believed to have evolved from the traditional accessories of Japanese incense ceremony, tabako-bons first came into use in the 17th century and were often beautifully decorated to display one's wealth and status.

This charming tabako-bon is shaped like an ikebana flower basket and is decorated with red lacquer and mother of pearl inlay in the form of cherry blossoms. The copper dish set into the top is a small hibachi (hi-ire) and was filled with lit coals and used to light one's pipe. A delightful variation of traditional tabako-bon forms, this lacquered box lives on as a colorful keepsake of the past.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
