Hand carved of taihu stone, a porous limestone found near Taihu Lake in Suzhou, this contemporary hand-carved stone basin evokes the graceful shape of a traditional lotus flower. Shaped with undulating curves, the container has the look of freeform pottery. Exploiting the stone’s conglomerate nature to suggest painterly daubs of color, the sculptor gives the vessel an almost fluid appearance.
