Although practiced for centuries, Chinese glass-making came into prominence during the Qing dynasty with the introduction of Peking glass. Adapting European technologies, workshops in the Imperial Palace began creating layered and intricately-carved glass pieces that mimicked the translucency of jade, semiprecious stones, and rare jewels. Similar to the process of making cameo glass, this petite vase was created by dipping a basic form in layers of white and red glass. The layers were then carved away in a process called "red cut to white," revealing a bas-relief pattern of flowering plants, auspicious ruyi, and a magnificent phoenix. A stunning example of peking glass craftsmanship, this vase's vibrant red decoration is made especially striking set against a luminous white background.

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
