This one-of-a-kind bamboo basket was designed to hold ikebana: a very special Japanese flower arrangement. Looking at the detail of the weave at the very top of the handle, which resembles a knot, indicates that the artisan who made this basket was truly a master of the art of basket weaving. The strip of bamboo that composes the knot carries all the way through the entire basket. You cannot see where it starts or ends or how it possibly winds its way through to create this beautiful form. The skills involved in this type of mastery were passed down from generation to generation. The Japanese government has even designated some bamboo artists as Living National Treasures.
