Blue and White Covered Jar with Fish and Flora

This lidded porcelain jar was painted by hand with fish and flora from the sea, representing blessings for wealth and for a life as content as a fish in water. Chinese blue and white ceramics have inspired ceramists worldwide since cobalt was first introduced to China from the Middle East thousands of years ago. The orange color of the fish is achieved by an iron underglaze technique.
