Introduced to Europe in the 14th century, Chinese porcelains were regarded rare and beautiful; today blue and whites, like this monumentally scaled vase, are among the most sought after by connoisseurs. The blue pigment is cobalt oxide and the graceful koi, flowers and plants were hand-painted by a contemporary Chinese artisan.
