Heaven and Earth Puddingstone Basin

In ancient China, connoisseurs valued stones that had interesting veins of color and patterns, or particularly lustrous finishes. This stone basin is carved by hand out of a block of puddingstone, a prized stone during the Ming dynasty. The square frame and circular basin reflect an ancient Chinese design motif: the outer square represents the earth and the inner circle represents the heavens.
