This large glazed jar was hand-crafted in China's Shanxi province over a century ago and was originally used for pickling food. Masterfully sculpted, the jar is patterned in relief with a series of floral medallions, featuring sprays of chrysanthemums, peach blossoms and orchids. A textured trim of scalloped and bead-like motifs border the jar's lip, encircled by a pattern of archaistic dragons, symbols of power and strength. The rim is left unglazed, the exposed ceramic set in beautiful contrast with the rich brown glaze that drips and pools down the jar's sides. Today, the monumental pot lives on as a statement planter or fish pond, ideal indoors or out.
