Painted in the style of Ming-dynasty cizhou ware, this early 20th century wine jar is hand-painted with gestural brushstrokes of warm browns atop a creamy-white slip base. Horizontal bands of trailing vines and floral motifs frame scenes of a scholar in resting in peaceful meditation within a traditional scholars' garden. With a gently tapered form and a glazed interior, this wine jar is wonderful in modern interiors as a decorative vase or planter.
