China is famous for its beautiful rice terraces; on rainy days steam from the nearby rivers shrouds the rice terraces in layers of mist. This beautiful mortar was hand carved over 150 years ago in China's Shanxi Province out of a single block of limestone. The mortar shows some signs of wear that attest to its age and use—grinding the outer husks off of grains of rice. This mortar will be ideal used today as a planter or a simple and sculptural birdbath.
