This hand-carved brush pot, bitong in Chinese, likely contained calligraphy brushes on a desk in a scholar’s studio. It is carved of Zitan, a dark precious, extinct Chinese hardwood. Made to look "organic", like a natural tree, this shape reflects the quiet simplicity scholars strove for, and emphasizes their relationship with nature.
