For thousands of years traditional Chinese doctors and apothecaries used mortars and pestles, like this one, to grind natural ingredients for special medicines. This one was cast by hand in iron during the early 20th century and decorated with chrysanthemums, symbols of strength and endurance. The inherent nature of iron was thought to enhance the remedies.
