Many Chinese scholars and learned men enjoyed smoking tobacco out of beautifully crafted pipes like this silver and bamboo pipe from the mid 1800's. But others thought it was a vile habit and claimed that “swallowing fire” was a practice only a demon, not a man, should enjoy. The owner of this pipe most likely disagreed with that sentiment.
