This sculptural form is actually a 19th century pipe made from a special type of bamboo that bulges between growth lines like a “Buddha's belly”. The shaft looks too long to hold comfortably, but the length helped filter the smoke. This special type of bamboo (Bambusa ventricosa), commonly called “Buddha belly bamboo”, is created by artisans who regulate the water and root space to train the bamboo to grow with the characteristic bulges that have inspired its colorful name. Smoking out of bamboo pipes was a popular pastime in China for relaxation as well as for the delivery of medicinal remedies to treat malaria, colds, and other ailments.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
