With the captivating form of a modern abstract sculpture, this footed vessel is actually a early 20th-century Burmese offering vessel called a hsun-ok. Used primarily in Buddhist monasteries during prayer, the hsun-ok would have been a spectacular sight, vibrantly colored and piled high with offerings of food and incense. An impressive example of Burmese woodworking, this pine wood vessel was expertly turned and hand-carved to create a dramatic silhouette. Cloaked in layer upon layer of dark black lacquer, the hsun-ok was then painted with a red cinnabar lacquer, beautifully worn over the years to give the vessel a fantastic texture. A stunning sculptural work with storied history, this hsun-ok vessel makes for a statement-making centerpiece or display stand.
