This unusual wooden bowl was carved from a single piece of rootwood to resemble a woven market basket, complete with an arched handle. Guided by currents in the wood grain, the basket is shaped with irregular edges and undulating curves, continuing a tradition of rootwood sculpture that was popular throughout the Qing dynasty. With a smooth texture that calls to be touched, this carved basket is wonderful as a fruit bowl or tabletop planter.
