This mid 19th century spectacular, gnarled monumental table was adapted from a centuries old tree root. At the time, it reflected a cultivated taste for nature's peculiar effects and humble associations that was widespread amongst a cultured group of Chinese artists and literati. Like a scholar's rock, it most likely lived in a artist's studio to inspire creativity with its spontaneous, wild and natural beauty. The well-worn, warmly patinated surface speaks to its age and calls to be touched.
