This unusual 19th century calligraphy brush consists of a carved serpent formed from a natural tree root. A bone collar holds the bristles in place. The original lacquer has gained depth and texture with use over time. A Chinese scholar would have used this folk formed brush for large scale strokes and monumental scrolls. He would have made his ink by hand by pulverizing solid ink sticks or cakes, adding water, and then blending the mixture together.
