Traces of the original lacquer in burnt orange and celadon remain on these eight very fine early 18th century courtyard doors, each elegantly inset carved with a symbol of knowledge, authority, and blessing. The passage of time combined with the master craftmanship created perfection—note the quiet of the beautifully aged crackled lacquer on the panels and frame, and the subtle inset carving at the bottom of the doors. Here we also see a clear connection between minimalism and the classic Taoist notions of beauty and balance: empty space equally important as solid shapes. These doors, some of our very favorites in the collection, triumph with incredible grace and peace.

Each panel is 18.75" wide x 104.75" high x 2"D"
