Pair of Famille Rose Phoenix Tail Vases

These delicate porcelain vases are made to a traditional form known as the phoenix-tail vase, defined by its tapered body, constricted neck, and elegantly flared lip. The contoured forms are finely decorated with overglaze enamels in the famille rose style with a scene of colorful birds perched on flowering branches amid pink peony blossoms. Emblems of spring and symbols of love, beauty, and wealth, peonies are common motifs in Chinese art and carry blessings of prosperity and happiness. A robin's egg blue glaze coats the interior and underside and a gilt border accents the flared lip. The underside is finished with the reign mark of the Daoguang period (1820-1850).
