When the Art Deco movement reached major Chinese cities like Tianjin and Shanghai, the design aesthetic that emerged was the perfect intersection of European modernism and Ming-dynasty refinement. This oval side table is a product of the era, crafted in the 1930s with a simple silhouette and pleasing, curvilinear form. Crafted of northern elm with a black lacquer finish, the table has one shallow drawer and two narrow doors that open to an interior compartment with one shelf. Reminiscent of provincial cabinets carved out from a solid tree trunk, this Deco cabinet blends into modern interiors as an end table or nightstand.
