The Mangbetu people focused on highly realistic art forms. This ceremonial jug seamlessly transitions between figurative and abstract forms, from the spout formed to look like hair, to the expressive face, and down to the rounded, gourd-shaped base. The vessel is textured with geometric patterns of raised and incised dots, arranged on the face and neck in a pattern that simulates ritual scarification. This marriage of form, spirituality, and intent is a trademark example of exemplary African art.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
