Swinging from trees or mounted to buildings, barbershop signs are fascinating examples of pop and folk art in 20th century Africa. Each sign was painted to take on the unique personality of the shop owner, expressing hair style options and the popular icons they emulate. This example is a triptych that references contemporary American culture of the time. In the lower left corner a razor boxes against the unruly hair of its subject, adding a comedic touch to entice passersby. Signed by the artist, Professor Justice Ofori, this sign promises customers the "Best of the Best."
