The unique formation of this early 19th century Chinese scholars' root sculpture brings to mind a mythical creature relaxing in a reclined posture. This type of natural sculpture is characterized as a "wooden scholars' rock" and was prized by Chinese artists as a source of inspiration for painting, poetry and calligraphy. The tradition of gnarled roots as sculpture stems from the Taoist affinities with nature and a sophisticated, cultivated taste for its peculiar effects and humble associations. The warmly patinated surface suggests that that this sculpture has been appreciated for generations.

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
