Drawing on the enduring phoenix tail form that dates to China’s Bronze Age, this modern-age vase from 1920 exhibits the sinuous line and gilded refinement that helped to define the Art Deco style that became a worldwide movement during the first decades of the 20th century. Glazed rich persimmon, the vase is painted with auspicious cranes, expressively rendered in gold with elegant, gestural lines. The lion ring handles refer to the ancient world, demonstrating the eclectic reference points that shaped Art Deco.
