This colorful porcelain bowl dates to the mid-19th century and was originally used as a serving dish for ritual offerings, placed before a home altar and piled high with fruit, baked goods, and other foods. The cartouche-shaped dish features sloping sides, a short footed base, and a bright turquoise-blue interior glaze.

The exterior is painted with famille rose enamel decoration of flowers, butterflies and buddha's hand citron, an auspicious offering fruit and a symbol of wealth. The delicately shaded designs are contrasted by a cool white field and bordered by abstract scrollwork and a crashing waves pattern at the base.
