Gazing up at this bed canopy, the married couple who commissioned this painting would have a constant reminder of good fortune. Delicately painted, the wood canopy brings to life symbols of prosperity and good fortune: the phoenixes representing joy and peace and the peonies royalty and virtue. Surrounded by complementary paintings, the bed created an enclosure, a style popular in southern China at the turn of the century.
