Igbo Title Stool

The Igbo tribe of Nigeria placed great stock in individuals earning ranks and titles throughout their lives. Owning a finely made stool represented one's earned right to sit above, as befit a person of rank. Sculpting complex geometric patterns from single woodblocks was a sign of the artisan's skill, and therefore carried even greater importance in society's eyes. This is a particularly rare example, as it shows the Igbo's famed skill in incorporating sophisticated negative spaces into their designs. Rich wood, fine design, and the hand made marks of a master craftsperson make this a beautiful sculpture for the modern home.
