Set in striking contrast to the black lacquer background, the gilt gold decoration on this 19th-century coffer elevates the piece to an exquisite work of art. Each of the four front panels are intricately painted with an auspicious bird surrounded by flowers of the four seasons. The hawk, a symbol of courage, broods beneath plum blossoms of winter. Beside it, a lively pheasant, a symbol of good fortune, preens beside the chrysanthemum blossoms of autumn. A long-necked crane, an emblem of longevity, wades amidst lotus flowers of summer, and a regal phoenix perches beneath the peonies of spring time, a powerful symbol of luck and resilience. Once placed as the centerpiece of a Qing-dynasty home and used for storage, this fine gilt coffer is fantastic today as a eye-catching sideboard or console table.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
