18th Century Red and Gilt Lacquered Trunk

For over 250 years - through many turbulent years of Chinese history - this red lacquered trunk has remained in beautiful condition. The low trunk is made of hide lacquered in a brilliant red, which has gained a fantastic crackled texture, punctuated by its original brass hardware. The front is painted with detailed courtyard scenes depicting a wealthy merchant with his attendants, and the sides are decorated with intricate scrollwork. Mounted on custom steel legs, this vibrant trunk becomes a captivating end table.
