Intricately constructed with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, this lacquered coffer was crafted by an artisan in northern China during the late Qing dynasty. Popular in China since ancient times, lacquer needed to be carefully applied by hand, coat-upon-coat, but lent a polished finish to wooden furniture, rich in color and character. A century of use of has given the lacquer finish of this ten drawer coffer a beautiful warmth and rich texture that calls to be touched.
