The Bete tribe saw the spirits of their elders as emissaries to nature in the spirit world. Their religious ceremonies centered around mediating that relationship, and would have used effigies of animals, like this charming wooden pangolin. To that end, this creature's creator carved the snout upraised and legs bent, suggesting the pangolin is preparing to dash. Despite the solid wood, the craftsman's skill expresses a dynamic, poised energy waiting to leap into motion.
