Bozo Antelope Mask

Emulating the graceful form of an antelope, this colorful mask by the Bozo people of Mali brought forth the animal’s protective spirit during lively group masquerades. Worn by a concealed dancer, the antelope mask is one of several animal spirits of the savannah that would be represented in group performances. The elongated mask is decorated with hammered sheet metal and topped by a miniature dancer - whose movements matched the human dancer's below. Painted with vibrant colors and bold patterns, this animated mask is fantastic mounted on a wall as a decorative sculpture.
