This 19th century provincial table from Northern China was likely used as an ancestral shrine in a provincial Confucian household. Among other things, incense, candles and fruits would have been placed on it as offerings to ancestors. The drawers are carved with flowers and vines and the fittings are iron. After over a century of use, the original lacquer finish has worn away, leaving the timbers incredibly smooth, with a texture that calls to be touched.
