Set of Four Treasure Lattice Panels

A hallmark of Qing-dynasty domestic architecture, hand-carved lattice panels such as these were originally used in provincial courtyard homes to allow light and air into a room while maintaining privacy.

Made of southern elm, known as jumu, the lattice screens are framed by detailed carved panels of floral arrangements and grand hanging bells. Different from carving or perforating wood, the art of making a lattice was an exacting craft. Requiring expert woodworking skills, the screen was created by precisely interlocking long and short pieces of carved jumu. With a timeless triangular lattice pattern, this set of panels brings room-defining geometry to a modern context. Panels can be connected with hinges to form a free-standing folding screen.
