Created in the 1970s just as China was beginning its ascent as a global economic force, this painted panel based on a mythological tale seems to foretell the nation’s strength and power. Pictured in what is described as a “yellow mountain atmosphere," a vividly animated scene depicts the bloody conquest of a pair of tigers. The cycle of life plays out with respective symbols, the hare symbolizing peace and longevity and the tigers ferocity and supreme power. We love the way the high-keyed colors and bright red frame invests these beasts with magnificent vitality.
