Trained first as a photographer and then as an illustrator, Yoko Tanaka takes a look at life’s quieter moments in her paintings. She chooses a limited palette of soft, smoky tones that give her works a hushed, otherworldly quality. With an illustrator’s eye for graphic impact, her figures are simplified residing in spare, sometimes fanciful, settings. In her oil on panel piece “Sharing,” two cloaked figures exchange an orb-like fruit that abound in an enchanted orchard full of winged horses.
