Traditional Chinese architecture follows set principles of design, traceable to the early Zhou dynasty - over three thousand years ago. The beauty of classic timber framework buildings was often enhanced by the addition of gilded paintings and elaborately carved embellishments, such as this striking pair of wooden valances. Carved over 250 years ago in China's Shanxi province, these valances bear a pattern of flower buds tucked within ornate scrollwork. Not many architectural elements of this size and age survived the Cultural Revolution, making this pair of valances an exceedingly rare find.
